roots manuva | bleeds

roots-manuva-bleeds

Roots Manuva is back with a dazzling new album, “Bleeds”. Past collaborations with everyone from Gorillaz to the Maccabees to Leftfield to Coldcut to the Cinematic Orchestra, Rodney Smith’s influence can be heard right across the musical landscape. Now, with his sixth studio album, he has made his most concise and focussed record to date, his most emotionally affecting and powerful release since his breakthrough, “Run Come Save Me”.

Drawing upon production assistance from young British producer, Fred, together with musical heavyweights Four Tet, Adrian Sherwood and Switch’s new production team, “With You”, the title of the record is, in the man’s own words, an “egocentric jest of daring to do things in the tradition of Jesus: I’m ready to bleed for the artform.” It is, of course, also a reference to the way in which genres, in the sonic world of Roots Manuva, have a tendency to bleed into one another, so that hip hop, reggae, techno, funk, neo-classical, all blend together to create “liquid soul, the blood, the bleeds that paint infinite sacred wonders in our dreams and unfold in our day-to-day.”

Released October 10th, pre-Order via Ninja Tune. Listen after the jump.

kamasi washington | the epic

kamasi-washington-the-epic

Jazzist, composer, and bandleader Kamasi Washington’s upcoming “The Epic” is unlike anything jazz has seen, and not just because it emanates from the boundary-defying Brainfeeder, which isn’t so much a label in the traditional sense as it is an unfurling experiment conducted by the underground producer Flying Lotus. The Epic is a 172-minute, three-volume set that includes a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir, and 17 songs overlaid with a compositional score written by Washington. Pulsing underneath is an otherworldly ten-piece band, each member of which is individually regarded as among the best young musicians on the planet – including bassist Thundercat and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr., bassist Miles Mosley, drummer Tony Austin, keyboard player Brandon Coleman, pianist Cameron Graves, and trombonist Ryan Porter. Patrice Quinn’s ethereal vocals round out the ensemble. »Read the full description on Ninja Tune«

Released 4th May 2015 on Brainfeeder. Pre-Order via iTunes and Ninja Shop.

portico. | living fields

portico-living-fields

The Portico band consisting of Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick and Jack Wyllie, are about to release their LP on Ninja Tune. “Living Fields” features guest performances by close friends of the trio, Jono McCleery, Joe Newman (Alt-J) and Jamie Woon. “Living Fields”, released 6 April 2015 on Ninja Tune.

“Portico make music which moves forward towards distant places while offering rare intimacy as well, arriving somewhere between structured pop songs and a disintegrating ambience, a unique blend of the sublunary and the celestial. Reverb drenched piano meshes with swathes of studio noise while vocals float high above a world of textural atmosphere. Drum machines crisply puncture the air around shimmering arpeggios of synth and electric bass. You can be untethered, detached in space only for a moment of detail to rush into focus. Melancholia and euphoria sunk into each other.” via Ninja Tune

Available on iTunes, Amazon or at Ninja Tune.
