Dabrye | Three/Three

All this changes in 2017 as Dabrye makes his long-awaited return with “Three/Three”, a razor-sharp rap album that brings to completion a prophetic trilogy. Mullinix’s incisive productions provide the backdrop for equally acute rhymes that run the gamut from intergenerational observations and being your best self to back alley deals and having fun in the ride. Guests include indie rap legend DOOM, whose previous collaboration with Dabrye remains a point of reference for many, Wu Tang storyteller Ghostface Killah, L.A word fanatic Jonwayne, and Long Island’s rugged surrealist Roc Marciano. Most importantly Three/Three is, much like its predecessor, an unfettered celebration of Detroit-area talent with Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Kadence, Quelle Chris, Danny Brown, Shigeto, Clear Soul Forces and more all lending their touch to Dabrye’s return.

Available February 16, 2018 on Bandcamp.

lecture: doom

red bull lectures

As some of you may or may not know, ego trip’s own Chairman Mao has been out in Madrid these past two weeks with the Red Bull Music Academy – hosting lectures, penning the occasional article for the RBMA website, hosting radio shows and gigging. His latest act: an in-depth, hour-and-a-half public conversation with that masked man of rap mystery, MF Doom. Bear witness as Doom discusses the early ’80s episodes of Afrika Islam’s “Zulu Beats” radio shows on WHBI, which would provide the inspiration for his signature audio collages. Listen as he explains the defining characteristics of his plethora of performance personas (Zev Love X, Doom, Viktor Vaughn, King Ghidra). Marvel as he dissects the makings of classic recordings such as KMD’s Mr. Hood and Black Bastards, Operation: Doomsday, and his essential collab with Madlib, Madvillain’s Madvillainy. Mystery, science, and theater – all in abundance when this Supervillain speaks.
