j dilla | the diary

j-dilla-the-diary

Back in 2013, it was announced that “The Diary”, a lost J Dilla vocal album made at the turn of the millennium, was being reassembled for a posthumous release. (The announcement was accompanied by a 12″ featuring the previously-unheard “Anthem” b/w “Trucks.”) now, the LP was given an official release date.

Constructed over the past decade from mixes and masters culled from J Dilla’s personal archive, The Diary features rapping from Dilla, Snoop Dogg, Kenny Wray, Bilal, Frank and Dank, Boogie, Kokane, and Nottz. The production was handled by Dilla, Madlib, Pete Rock, Supa Dave West, Hi-tek, Nottz, House Shoes, and Bink!, among others.

The Diary will be out April 15 via his own label Mass Appeal and Dilla’s PayJay imprint, thanks to the support of Dilla’s estate.

ghostface killah | twelve reasons to die II

adrian-younge-twelve-rasons-to-die-2-ghostface-killah

Adrian Younge announces the release of “Twelve Reasons To Die II”, starring Ghostface Killah, featuring Raekwon, RZA, Bilal, Vince Staples and more.

Where the first installment of “Twelve Reasons To Die” was based in 1960s Italy – detailing the machinations of the feared DeLuca crime family – Part II inhabits the grimy streets of mid-1970s New York City. Descendants of the DeLucas are running the city, but a powerful, younger crime syndicate is percolating, commanded by black gangster Lester Kane (personified by Raekwon). As Kane’s power grows, he takes on the DeLucas and a bloodbath ensues. Kane has always known the legend of Tony Starks, who was killed by the DeLucas in Italy and whose remains were partially used to create twelve vinyl records. When played back in the “old world,” the Ghostface Killer rose and destroyed the Italian faction. This plays into the story’s conclusion at the end of Part II.

The storyline for Part II is vividly brought to life with the help of Younge’s never-endingly evocative and unique brand of cinematic, psychedelic soul. The music – on which Younge himself plays upwards of 10 instruments on certain songs – was recorded strictly on analog tape, to bring out the true grit of the ‘70s era that provides the Twelve Reasons backdrop.

Out 10th July on Linear Labs, pre-order digital on iTunes, vinyl direct. Stream some tracks below.

Drummer Otis Brown III – an invaluable sideman with the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Joe Lovano, Terence Blanchard, Oliver Lake, Somi, and others – has announced the release of his debut album ‘The Thought of You’, which will arrive September 23 via Revive/Blue Note, a new partnership between Revive Music and Blue Note Records. The first single taken from the album “The Thought Of You Pt. 1” featuring Bilal debuted this week on Billboard.

Brown’s maiden voyage features an impressive roll call of artists including a core band consisting of pianist Robert Glasper, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, saxophonist John Ellis, and bassist Ben Williams, with organist Shedrick Mitchell and guitarist Nir Felder making special appearances. Singers Bilal, Gretchen Parlato, and Nikki Ross contribute standout performances that underscore the sentiments of the album’s co-producer, Derrick Hodge, who says, “Otis has become one of those drummers who once you hear him play, his experience becomes your experience in the moment.” (read more on Blue Note Records)
