Karriem Riggins | Headnod Suite

For „Headnod Suite“, Karriem Riggins second album on Stones Throw Records, he expertly builds on his credentials with 29 tracks of pure hip-hop. Each track deftly crafted with swing that only a drummer would know. Swing is the weapon. And there’s always a message, be it verbal or instrumental. “Headnod Suite is a concept of several rhythmic ideas fused together,” Riggins says. “I wanted to explore the power of interludes and marrying different styles and harmony together.”

Common makes a reciprocal vocal appearance on the track “Yes Yes Y’all,” which gives way to literal grunts from James Brown and the 1-2 shot of “Trombone Love” and the 16-bit funk “Crystal Stairs.” If 2012’s Alone Together was right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz, Riggins’ current path is less the jazz found in his family and career lineage, and more the hip-hop culture he found on his own.

Fabiano Do Nascimento | Tempo dos Mestres

„Tempo dos Mestres“ (Time of the Masters) is the second album from the tireless, young Brasilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento. It finds its roots in the depths of the Amazon rain forest, passed down through generations of Native Brasilians, and is imbibed by the Afro-Brasilian culture that arose after Portuguese colonization. It is the third Brasilian album released on Now-Again, following Seu Jorge and Almaz and Do Nascimento’s debut Dança dos Tempos. Do Nascimento’s is joined on Tempo dos Mestres by his long time percussionist, Ricardo “Tiki” Pasillas on trap drums and percussion, and Sam Gendel on saxophone and flute. Vocals are performed by Thalma de Freitas and Carla Hasset.

The album was produced and mixed by Dança dos Tempos producer Luther Russell, who recorded Do Nascimento and his band directly to a 1/2″ Ampex tape machine with engineer Jason Hiller. It was sparingly mastered by Elysian Masters to focus on the subtleties of the performances. Do Nascimento’s fans include legendary percussionist Airto Moreira, who recorded Dança dos Tempos and can be found playing live with Do Nascimento. “He’s Brazilian but (his mind is) from a place in Brazil that is not common.” Moreira states. “Fortunately, we still have some musicians who like to play music and who like to touch the instrument and who like that energy!”

Released on Now-Again Records, available on Rappcats.

Gabriel Garzón-Montano | Jardín

Gabriel Garzón-Montano - Jardin

On his debut LP „Jardín“, Gabriel Garzón-Montano sings of the struggles and uncertainties of living in America today, and the universal challenges of love.

A Brooklyn-born and raised child of immigrant parents, Gabriel’s aesthetic is an extension of his French-Colombian heritage. His influence is a pastiche of Bach sonatas, Cumbia records, and the machine gun funk that echoes up and down Nostrand Ave. His mother, a member of the Philip Glass ensemble in the 1990s, instilled within him a painstaking attention to detail that remains a hallmark of his process. “She is the reason that I love music,” he says. Her rigorous classical instruction formed the foundation on which he honed his skills over the years in the lab, copping Stevie’s changes, studying Prince’s lyrics, and absorbing the beat theses of Timbaland, Dilla, and Pete Rock.

Fans of „Bishouné“ will find familiar ground in the organic sounds and impressionist narratives of Jardín: the Moog-heavy “Fruitflies” reads as a lyrical epilogue to “Keep on Running,” while “The Game” brings the folkloric percussion of “Me Alone” home from Cartagena to Crown Heights. The enduring choruses of “Sour Mango,” “Crawl,” and “My Balloon” exhibit a melodic and compositional craftsmanship reminiscent of the fan favorite “Everything is Everything,” confirming Garzón-Montano’s innate pop sensibilities, and his knack for fusing a wide range of classic influences and cutting-edge ideas to create a sound all his own.

Available Januar 27th on iTunes or Stones Throw Records.

Kid Koala | Music To Draw To: Satellite

kid-koala-music-to-draw-to-satellite

Kid Koala’s „Music To Draw To: Satellite“ is an uncharted musical journey for the legendary scratch DJ, producer, and composer. Kid Koala’s fifth studio album is an expansive work of ambient electronic soundscapes and chilling ballads sung by Icelandic artist Emiliana Torrini. Created during the gelid Montreal winter, its eighteen movements tell a tale of discovery and loss through the lens of lovers separated by an early space mission to Mars. An album of many firsts for Eric San, this inaugural volume in the Music To Draw To series features Kid Koala collaborating with a vocalist, writing lyrical poetry, and producing and performing all instruments. Satellite is the renowned audio-collagist’s first non-sample-based record, instead using an array of synthesizers, keys, guitars, strings, turntables, noisemakers and San’s inventive recording techniques to lay out this heartrending musical story. The output is in stark, beautiful comparison an ambient masterpiece: over 72 atmospheric minutes of stardust settling over Kid Koala’s trove of turntables and sentiment.

The Deluxe CD contains a 20-page booklet encased in a limited edition 80-page foil-stamped hardcover sketchbook. The 2LP gatefold vinyl comes with the 20-page booklet.

Pre-order „Music To Draw To: Satellite“ at Arts&Crafts, release date is  January 20th.
