Leonard Charles | Basement Donuts

leonard-charles-basement-donuts

Down in scenic Auckland, New Zealand, tucked in a small basement studio, musician Leonard Charles & his friends paid tribute to J Dilla’s ’06 „Donuts“ release by re-recording the entire 31-track album on live instruments. Charles gives the tracks a modern funk reinterpretation on live bass, drums, clavinet, Rhodes & synths – sans any sampling of the original source or sourced material. Featuring vocals by Anji Toy, Adi Dick, Ruby Walsh and Georgia Anne Muldrow on the emotional tribute „Airworks“.

„Basement Donuts“ is available for digital download and as limited-edition tape on Bandcamp.

Hidden Orchestra | Wingbeats

hidden-orchestra-wingbeats

Hidden Orchestra is the solo studio project of multi-instrumentalist composer/producer Joe Acheson. The album features drummer Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, pianist/violinist Poppy Ackroyd and long-time collaborators including harpist Mary Macmaster, cellist/saw player Su-a Lee and Czech bass clarinettist Jiri Javurek.

Although written for sampling, the pieces included on the “Wingbeats” EP stand on their own as individual compositions, striking elements coming to the fore in each one. And each source track tells a story: of birds fluttering in to feed on crumbs in a rural British garden, or flocking in a hedge in the snow in the French Alps; of an imaginary string orchestra; of a suspenseful, early-hours piano jam; of a spot of instrument shopping in Istanbul while on tour; of a sleepy village engulfed by an exhilarating early-morning dawn chorus, rounded off with church bells.

Out on Tru Thoughts, available at Bandcamp.

Myele Manzanza | One Point One

myele-manzanza-onepointone

First Word Records present ‘OnePointOne’ from Myele Manzanza, recorded live at the legendary Blue Whale in Los Angeles. The son of a Congolese master percussionist, New Zealand born Myele first gained international attention as one third of NZ soul act, Electric Wire Hustle. The album features the stellar talents of pianist/programmer Mark de Clive-Lowe, and the Quartetto Fantastico string quartet led by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Suite For Ma Dukes), virtuoso bassist Ben Shepherd and guest vocalists Nia Andrews and Charlie K. As well as live takes on some of the material from his debut album, there are covers of Theo Parrish, Jill Scott and the late, great Bobby Hutcherson, capturing an intimate performance from a fearless artist at the hub of the resurgent West Coast Jazz scene.

Paternoster | Remixes and Versions

paternoster-remix-versions

German label Heart Working Class presents an album of German and Austrian beat makers reimagining Paternoster’s incredible psych-rock opus. Berlin-based label owner, journalist and all-around music enthusiast Stephan Szillus, has just issued a remix album of the favorite 70s, underground Austrian album, featuring some of Austria and Germany’s underground beat-making heroes.

“In 2015 I embarked on a journey to find the remaining members of the short-lived Vienna underground band Paternoster, because my friend Eothen Alapatt of Now-Again Records wanted to re-issue their first and only record, one of Euro prog rock’s holy grails. I met Franz Wippel, the band’s mastermind and songwriter, and Paternoster was re-released as part of the Now-Again Reserve subscription service in April 2016. Around the same time I sent the master files to a few of my beatmaking friends from Germany and Austria, resulting in this collection of remixes and versions. From underground trap to throwback boom-bap and afro house — Paternoster still sounds very much alive, even 44 years after its release.”

Lee Fields & The Expressions | Special Night

lee-fields-and-the-expressions-special-night

Lee Fields released his new album “Special Night” on Big Crown Records. The album was produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions. „Special Night“ was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. It is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions.

“When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I’m talking to my lady — literally, expressing the way I feel. You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I’m recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life”. – Lee Fields

josef leimberg | astral progressions

josef-leimberg-astral-progressions

Trumpeter and composer Josef Leimberg released his debut full-length „Astral Progressions“.  Leimberg gained a unique level of traction with his work on the multiple Grammy Award winning Kendrick Lamar LP „To Pimp A Butterfly“. Credited under the LoveDragon moniker with Terrace Martin, his time with „To Pimp A Butterfly“ only represents a small fragment of his accomplishments. His collaborative resume over the decades is astounding, consisting of production, writing and feature credits with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Robin Thicke, Shafiq Husayn, Funkadelic, Freestyle Fellowship, Dr. Dre, Murs, King Tee, Suga Free, Saafir and Busdriver. These connections have undoubtedly spread life all over Astral Progressions.

Leimberg’s debut album features an array of innovators and game changers in modern progressive music. Kamasi Washington, Bilal, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kurupt, Terrace Martin and Miguel Atwood Ferguson are just a small list of the brilliant minds that make the Astral Progressions outing special. Many of the featured artists became with the LP through world renowned creator Shafiq Husayn. Leimberg would connect with various musicians associated to his camp through studio recordings, gigging and rehearsals, building on his compositions in a very organic and social way.

nxworries | yes lawd!

nxworries-yes-lawd-2016

Last December, Anderson .Paak and producer Knxwledge put out the „Link Up & Suede“ EP, their first release as NxWorries. The Los Angeles duo have now announced their debut LP, „Yes Lawd!“, which will be released on October 21st via Stones Throw.

„On Yes Lawd!“, .Paak – who calls the album “my best work” – plays theatrically brash version of himself who sings like a ’70s superstar and talks shit like a stone cold player. But the performance is seeded with details from his life, which has seen a fair share of struggle and hard-won triumph. Meanwhile, Knx weaves a tapestry of sampled bits and live fragments—bass, brass and violin—that smooths everything over, reminding us that despite whatever struggle it took to get here… well, you already know the name: NxWorries.

Out October 21th, pre-order on Bandcamp, stream below.

the gaslamp killer | instrumentalepathy

the-gaslamp-killer-instrumentalepathy

With many new roads traveled over the last few years, The Gaslamp Killer is back with the full-length LP „Instrumentalepathy“. The new LP features Gonjasufi, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Niki Randa, Kid Moxie, Mophono, Amir Yaghmai and The Heliocentrics.

As many know, GLK used the triumphs of battling a near death experience three years ago when shaping his debut Cuss Records album. A handful of the tracks were even captured from his bed, unable to walk, with morphine running through his veins and staples in his body. A musical illumination that one could argue helped save his life and steared him towards the achievements he has accumulated with his live band The Gaslamp Killer Experience. Instrumentalepathy marks the catalyst point of an important road for GLK and the electronic community at large.

„Instrumentelephy“, like his latest releases, continues down the rabbit hole of his debut full length Breakthrough (Brainfeeder) and the recent live record with his band The Gaslamp Killer Experience. Molding psychedelic ethos and heavy drum breaks with the traditional music language of his ancestors and the futuristic landscapes of modern electronica, GLK continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music.

Releases September 16, 2016 via Cuss Records, available on Bandcamp.

yussef kamaal | black focus

yussef-kamaal-black-focus

The borders between London’s musical tribes have always been porous. For Yussef Kamaal, the sound of the capital – with its hum of jungle, grime and broken beat – has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. In the states, the genre’s long-running to-and-fro with hip hop – from Robert Glasper to Kamasi Washington – has reimagined it within US culture. On Black Focus, Yussef Kamaal frame jazz inside the bass-saturated, pirate radio broadcasts of London.

Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazz-funk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment. The pair, made up of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), have had little in the way of formal training. Instead, their musical tastes – and approach to playing – are indebted to Thelonious Monk’s piano as much as the drum programming of Kaidi Tatham.

Yussef Kamaal will release his debut album „Black Focus“ through Brownswood records on November 4th.

shabaka & the ancestors | wisdom of elders

shabaka-and-the-ancestors-wisdom-of-elders

„Wisdom of the Elders“ was recorded in Johannesburg in 2015 on one of many trips Shabaka Hutchings took there to immerse himself in the country’s rich musical heritage. The album is a psalm in nine parts. An episodic unfurling of a sonic journey across the Atlantic.

“The grand scheme of this album is to present the musical language that I normally associate with my UK bands in the context of SA musicians and musical sensibilities,” – explains Shabaka Hutchings.

Eight men in a studio in Johannesburg; one tenor sax, one alto sax, one trumpet. One on vocals, one on ivory, one bass, one on percussion and one the drums. 800 million voices. 700 years. Millions of bones cracking under the weight of 22 false free years. Innumerable tiny sparks. One uncontrollable blaze.
