The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist, Gene Dudley. The debut album, “Saturday Shifting”, was recorded in a cupboard in Muswell Hill, North London, and features the man himself on trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano. On a couple of occasions, though, Gene had to budge over to allow fellow musicians Ewan Whyte and Tom Jackson to fit in a play a solo or two, but other than that, everything you hear on this album comes from the mind, mouth, fingers and heart of Mr. Gene Dudley Esq. Fans of labels like Truth & Soul and Daptone will relish these sonorous soulful offerings, but the influences on this album are wide ranging. Now available on Wah Wah 45s.
After his successful debut album „Keep It Raw”, Dusty now released his new project “Mood Matters” via Jazz & Milk. The album has gained heavy support from Mr. Scruff, Simbad, Moonstarr, Jeremy Sole, Dom Servini, Nik Weston and many more. Place your order online via Bandcamp.
Don’t miss out on the Jazz&Milk Album Release Party at STRøM in Munich on May 3rd. Dusty & the Mood Matters Trio will perform several tracks of the album live.
Tim Maia, the Brazilian Funk Soul Godfather was the real thing. His 1970 debut album introduced his audacious talent, as well as North American soul and funk musical influences, forever changing Brazilian popular music. His legendary appetites sought out carnal AND spiritual fulfillment in equal measure. He bought 100 hits of LSD and handed them out to the staff of his record label. At the height of his mid-70s success he joined the Cult of Racional Energy; watching for spaceships while wearing only white clothes and playing only white instruments! Yet the two albums he recorded for the Cult are among his best. His songs search for love, and they dig into the existential. His own lyrics say it best: “I am so groovy now and I don’t care!”. Stream the entire album below and watch the animated short movie on Tim Maia, narrated by Devendra Banhart. The album is available on Luka Bop, jump over and save a free download.
With his debut album „People Make The World Go Round“ the French producer Medline is taking you on a trip down memory lane by paying tribute to the jazz funk masters who’s music shaped the musical DNA of hip-hop. From Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith to Freddie Hubbard and the Heath Brothers. Songs like „Everybody Loves The Sunshine“, „Red Clay“ or „Smilin’ Billy Suite“ have been a staple amongst hip-hop and jazz fans alike for a long time. But the album is more than a sample song-book of 90ties rap. Medline reinterpretates the songs in his very own way. A beatmaker by trade, Medline acts as a one man orchestra playing every instrument himself. with a strong focus on the flute. Think Herbie Mann joins Yesterdays New Quintett with a headnod towards broken beat. On three songs he is joined by Roni Alkekengi who’s sultry vocals are a perfect match.
