marla | madawaska valley

Marla is a German/Spanish singer-songwriter, her upcoming debut album ‘Madawaska Valley’ was recorded in Toronto and will be released April 8th via Melting Pot Music. Even though Marla sang her whole life, she never thought she’d pursue music. As her sister quit the guitar, Marla picked it and covered tunes until she started writing around the age of 15. Besides the fact that she played classical cello since age 6, she grew up with no musical background in her family.

Inspired by traveling the world, Marla is processing her lost love in these songs, softly picked on acoustic guitar. Her mellow dreamy melodies and deep airy voice might remind one of artists like Jessica Pratt and reminiscent Nico. After touring with David Celia in early 2015, she decided to record her debut album in Toronto with him as producer and sideman. She easily won over audiences playing from Toronto, over Montreal up to Halifax and all over Europe.

Out on April 8th via Melting Pot Music, available on Bandcamp.

rodrigo amarante | cavalo

After the indefinite break of „Los Hermanos“, in 2007, Rodrigo Amarante began to devote himself to the Orquestra Imperial, and the group Little Joy, who founded together with Fabrizio Moretti and Binki Shapiro. After the release of the first album of the trio in 2008, the band was on tour in Brazil and around the world by 2009. Living in Los Angeles, in a place where he was unknown, Amarante then began to write about this „exile“ and to know again its nature, forming what would become horse (cavalo).

The 2013 released album „Cavalo“ was recorded in Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro in 2012 and contains tracks sung in three different languages: Portuguese, English and French, plus some Japanese verses in the title track. Amarante alone recorded most of the album, which features the participation of former bandmates, as Rodrigo Barba, Fabrizio Moretti and Devendra Banhart.

Full album stream is available after the jump. Available on iTunes.

opez | dead dance

Describing their style as „Latin Desert & Funeral Party“ music, Opez clearly go their own special way. But listen to the debut album „Dead Dance“ and you will find that this path is quite an exciting one. Set in a haunting environment of acoustic instruments and an expertly stylish production, the twelve songs recorded by Italian musicians Massi Amadori and Francesco Tappi are a journey into a twilight world of emotion and imagination.

With additional musicians like Fabio Paglierani, an expert in dub who brings a echoing twist to the sultry groove of „Adriatica“ and „Carlos Primero“ or Fabio „Mocambo“ Tozzi who puts „Estelita“, „Diavolanza“, „Malinco“ and „Libre“ into an authentic Fifties environment “Dead Dance” is a band affair. The vocals of Annalisa Bartolini on „Carlos Primero“ and „Sangoda“, as well as Dimitri „Didi“ Mazzs on „Malinco“, add to the complete picture.

Out on Agogo Records, available at Bandcamp, HHV or iTunes. Stream the entire album below …

forgotten songs vol. two

Adam Scrimshire just released the second volume of his „in between“ series. ‚Forgotten Songs‘ features six unheard songs. ‚Saltwater‘ featuring Matthew Halsall was written and recorded just a few short weeks after his first album ‚Along Came The Devil One Night‚ in 2009. ‚Driftwood‘, is an acoustic guitar track, he played it while recording ‚The Hollow‚. Modified Man, Fuselage, 7th Tide, A Place For Everything – all experiments.

„… but I myself have been fairly unsettled since then and don’t know what the next album step for me is if, in fact, there should be one at all. These were slated for a new and different project, but, I decided to clear the cupboards and get rid of everything, so here they are. Last time I kind of just pulled them together and put them out, this time I’ve tried to build something a little more cohesive for you – hopefully you can enjoy this while I decide what to do next!“

Download the EP for free or give a little contribution on bandcamp Volume One is also still available.

all guitar

We stumbled across Richard Houghten’s music on the skateboard video ‚Urban Isolation‘ by Russell Houghten (watch the video below). Richard Houghten is from Oakland/United States, he started playing guitar as kid and loved working with a tascam 4 track recorder, making use of over dubbing and flipping over the tape to record in reverse. For the album ‚All Guitar‘, he used only one acoustic guitar, and manipulate and change it as much as he could to reach out of its normal boundaries. Released April 8th 2014, available for free on Bandcamp.

first mind

London-based songwriter Nick Mulvey, former member in Mercury Award nominees Portico Quartet, is about to release his debut album. With an abundance of genres at his fingertips, Mulvey set about creating a sound that was both striking and individual, intertwining influences of great musicians such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits with a variation of African styles, including guitarist Kawele. This resulted in the sweet melodies and rhythmic strumming patterns that can be heard on his Dan Careyproduced EP „Fever to the Form“, which was released in 2013. His full-length album „First Mind“ was due to arrive in 2014. You can pre-order now on iTunes.

We want to introduce to you singer and producer Casssandre from Brussels, Belgium. She’s preparing her upcoming debut album „Autour de Minuit“. You can listen to some of her songs and watch the teaser video below.

fink & rco

Last year, Fink performed a concert with one of the world’s best symphony orchestras – the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Fink’s music was rearranged for the orchestra by composer and orchestrator Jules Buckley, one of the most in-demand arrangers in Europe. His instinctive understanding of how to harness the huge power of an orchestra to play songs by contemporary musicians verges on the genius. Now, Ninja Tune is releasing the brilliant results. Fink Meets the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will be released 14 October – order now at the Ninjashop. Watch „Yesterday Was Hard On All Of Us“, and download a free track here.
